22 Questions to Ask Before You Write a Single Word

To write successful copy, you need to know as much as you can. It goes beyond reading background materials, reviewing old marketing pieces and doing some cursory research on the Web.

You need to get inside peoples’ heads.

Start with your clients. They know their business and their customers better than you do. (If they don’t, they should. You can help them learn more.)

How? Use a marketing/creative brief to get the information you need to ace the copywriting (and marketing) assignment. (A marketing/creative brief is a tool used by ad agencies and corporate marketing and creative departments.)

Following is a marketing/creative brief adapted from one I used during my stint at a Seattle ad agency. Even though I now work solo, I still use it today.

(Begin form)

Marketing/Creative Brief

(Note: Designed for B2B; much of this brief is also applicable to B2C.)

Good input is key to a successful project, campaign, or marketing program. This marketing/creative brief is designed to elicit good input. But it takes thorough and thoughtful answers on your part. Please answer the following questions carefully.

1. What is the description of the piece(s)? (Ad, Web site, brochure, radio script, direct mail, etc.)

2. What is the marketing focus? (What products or services are we telling about?)

3. What is the communications problem that the piece(s) must solve? (Awareness, positioning or repositioning, product introduction, category introduction, etc.)

4. Who is the audience? (Demographics, title, function, responsibility, etc.)

5. What is their point of view about the product, service, category?

6. Who is the secondary audience(s), if any?

7. What business problems or issues does the product(s)/service(s) solve for the audience(s)? (Efficiency issues, profitability issues, operations issues, technology issues, etc.)

8. What effect do we want the piece(s) to have on the target audience(s)? (Purchase, phone call, visit Web site, request more information, increase their awareness, etc.)

9. What can we offer to achieve the desired response? (Demos, situation evaluation, sales collateral, personal visit, white paper, etc.)

10. What is the single essential message we must tell the target audience(s) to achieve the desired effect? (Be as concise as possible.)

11. What evidence is there to support our claims? (Features and benefits, testimonials, case studies, etc.)

12. Can anyone else make a similar promise?

13. Are there any technology issues to address? (Compatibility, operating systems, hardware requirements, etc.)

14. What specific industry issues must be addressed? (Trends, etc.)

15. Are there any industry, product or competitive issues to be avoided?

16. What tone should the piece employ? (Hardhitting/serious, educational/informative, humorous, etc.)

17. What do you like about your current piece(s)? (Look and feel, tone, messaging, functionality, etc.)

18. What don’t you like about your current piece(s)? (Look and feel, tone, messaging, functionality, etc.)

19. What overall impressions (look and feel, etc.) would you like the piece(s) to make?

20. Will this piece(s) be used with any other pieces? (proposals, collateral, letters, etc.)

21. How will the piece(s) be used (online, leave behind, trade shows, mailed, etc.) and at what point in the sales cycle?

22. Any other comments?

(End form)

Admittedly, getting clients to answer these questions isn’t always easy.

That’s why it’s best to be flexible with the use of a marketing/creative brief. You can ask the client to fill it out. You can use it to interview the client. You can fill it out yourself for the client’s review. Any sort of collaborative approach works well.

In the end, stress to your clients that if they want more clicks, more leads and more sales, they need to actively participate in the input process.

One you have all the information you need, you’re ready to write a winner.

Best food safety tips for young people leaving home

If you’re leaving home for the first time, you’re probably looking forward to eating your favorite food and experimenting in the kitchen. Who knows you could even be a budding Jamie Oliver. But remember, each year an estimated 5.4 million Australians get food poisoning. So do you know how to lessen the risk that the food you prepare or buy ready to eat will make you sick with food poisoning?

You can help keep your food safe by following the four tips:
Clean, Cook, Chill and Separate.

Clean

Bugs can get into food by hitching a ride on hands, working surfaces or utensils. You can stop them if you do these things, before you start to cook and after you handle raw meats.

•Wash your hands. Just running some water over your hands isn’t enough to kill the bugs. Wash for 20 seconds with soap, rinse and then dry well.
•Wash and dry chopping boards, utensils and work surfaces.
•Use well cleaned chopping board, utensils and dishes for food that will not be cooked or heated before eating.
•Make sure you wash your hands thoroughly after handling a pet.

Cook

Raw meat may have bugs on it that can cause food poisoning if they’re not killed before you eat the food. Solid pieces of meat, like steak or a whole roast will only have bugs on the outside surfaces. That means that when you cook them on the outside, the bugs will be killed. Because of this, it’s safe to eat them when they’re still pink or even red in the center. But when the meat is minced, rolled up or cut into to remove the bone or to stuff it, the bugs from the outside surface spread to the inside.

•Always cook chicken or other poultry, minced or boned meat, hamburger, stuffed meat and sausages right through until all juices are clear to make sure all bugs are killed.
•Defrost frozen poultry and rolled and stuffed meat completely before cooking or else they may not cook right through.
•Always follow cooking instructions on packaged food.
•Reheat leftovers to steaming hot before eating.
•Never put cooked meat onto the same plate on which you had the raw meat without washing and drying it well. (Watch out for this mistake when barbecuing)

Chill

The number of bugs on food increases quickly at temperatures between 5 and 60 degrees Celsius. To stop this, you have to keep the food above 60 degrees or below 5 degrees where possible.

•Keep your fridge at 5 degrees or below.
•Keep all cooked food, vegetables, salads, dairy and similar food in the fridge.
•Refrigerate hot food as soon as it stops steaming – don’t let it cool to room temperature on the bench top.
•Refrigerate leftovers promptly — it’s not a good idea to leave the remains of your evening pizza on the bench overnight and then eat the rest for breakfast.
•If your fridge is too crowded, the cold air can’t circulate properly. If you’re having a party and your fridge is overloaded, do the unthinkable — take out the beer and wine. You can keep drinks cool by using Eskys or in the laundry tub packed with ice. This will not only leave more room in the fridge for the food, but will also mean the fridge gets opened less often and so stays colder.

Separate

Another way bugs from raw meat can spread from one food to another is by touching or dripping on to it. If the raw meat touches or drips on a food which will not be cooked before being eaten (like salad), the salad will then have the bugs on it. The bugs on the meat will be killed when you cook it, but you’ll eat the salad – bugs and all.
•Keep raw meat and poultry from touching other food.
•Keep raw meat and poultry in the bottom of the fridge or, even better, in a sealed container, so it can’t drip onto other food.
•Cover all stored food.

AND
IF YOU’RE SICK, ASK SOMEONE ELSE TO COOK OR GET A TAKE AWAY — DON’T SPREAD YOUR BUGS TO OTHERS.

By following these tips, you can help ensure that you, and people you cook for, are safe from food poisoning.

Relaxation Response Technique

Relaxing isn't always as easy as it sounds. To help you learn how to relax or keep in practice, try one or both of the methods below. Each method should be practiced at least once daily.
This method of relaxation can give your mind a rest from the onslaught of stress by the special use of a verbal device, such as a sound, word, or phase. By silently repeating the word or phase over and over, you provide a calming focus for your attention and a means of breaking the chain of everyday thoughts.
STEP ONE: Sit in a comfortable position.
STEP TWO: Close your eyes and relax your muscles.
STEP THREE: Focus on your breathing. Breathe slowly and naturally.
STEP FOUR: Select a word or phase such as the number "one" (or, even
better, a word or phase that has special meaning to you). Then, repeat it silently or see it in your mind's eye each time you exhale.
When outside thoughts intrude during the meditation, disregard them and return to the word or phase you've selected. It's essential always to maintain a passive, relaxed style in dealing with any interruptions.

Visualization
Mental imagery is another effective method of reducing stress. A little like a daydream, mental imagery uses both sight and sound to help you relax:
1. Get into a comfortable position sitting or lying down.
2. Close your eyes. Breathe out very slowly and easily. Breathe in. Slowly, breathe out. Continue until your breathing becomes smooth and rhythmic.
3. Visualize a peaceful, relaxing scene. Try one of the images below or make up one of your own:
• Picture yourself walking on a deserted beach. Hear the gentle hiss of the waves coming ashore. Feel the soft sand under your feet. Let the warmth of the sum untie the knots of tension all over your body.
• Place yourself on a mountaintop with a tropical garden just below. See the glistening dew on the surrounding trees. Listen for the sound of a waterfall in the distance.
• Envision a cloud floating down, enveloping you and supporting you completely as you float away. Feel the air as it flows over your body. Listen to the calming winds.
• Imagine you're resting under a willow tree next to a lake. Listen to the leaves rustle overhead and the gentle lapping of the water. Look at a nearby field of multicolored wildflowers. .

The World Health Organization (WHO) and International Agency for Research on Cancer, which is part of the above, have confirmed that human exposure is dangerous to the cell for an extended period of time.

Cancer may develop if exposed to a time of at least 30 minutes a day, since the electromagnetic fields generated by radio frequency mobile phones can become highly carcinogenic to humans, as one of the main elements of emergence of a type of malignant brain tumor called glycome."

Currently, the WHO estimates the existence of 5,000 million cell phone subscriptions worldwide, which can lead to a wave immense future of cancer.

For these investigations there are skeptics as the organization of ED YONG UK which said that although it is clear that there is some evidence to believe that cancer is linked to the wave of mobile phones, is quick to draw conclusions so early, wait happens in the long term. He also claims that most studies to date has found no links between phones and cancer, and if there was this relationship is not significant.

The wireless communications industry Mobile Manufacturers Forum (MMF) in which are linked companies such as Nokia, Motorola and Samsung today announced that investigations by the (WHO) are not final.

The best recommendation at this time is used by some long time the mobile phone, also used mostly the speakerphone, text messaging, and speakerphone, especially as far as possible try not to expose children, as their neurological system is immature.

Three Excellent Exercises to become healthy

Here are the best ways to train at home with dumbbells. You cannot neglect the training of the upper back, as it is one of the major areas of burning body fat. As it is not so much muscle mass at the top, you can really burn many calories in the training area.

However, many people have trouble training or exercise in a specific area of your home because they lack access to an adjustable bar where they can do inverted rows for body weight on the floor.

Therefore, this leaves us with a small chair, dumbbells, and a ball. Fortunately, there are some back exercises different we can do and add to the variation in our training that will help us enjoy them more.

The first exercise is the dumbbell pullover which will train the abdominals, chest, and his race. However, it is important to be careful when performing this exercise because it can really hurt if you try to do too much weight.

There are a couple of different ways of doing this exercise. One way is to extend a bank regularly. Hold the dumbbell above your chest with a slight bend in your arms, and reducing the back on his head. You begin to feel an extension and using your lats, pull the DB stands on his chest. As the DB is closer to his chest, then chest muscles begin to make the most of the work.

An alternative method to make the sweater DB is through a bank. In this position you will feel a greater extent in the lats in the down position, but you want to use extra caution in amount of weight you select. The more extension, more risk. In this position, keep your hips up, the glut contracted, reinforced and lower abs DB, and then retire on top.

A second exercise you can do is Weightlifting Row. As the DB sweater, there are several different ways which this exercise can be performed.

Starting with the basic DB row, place your left hand and knee on the bench, right leg slightly tilt the back end, the apartment reinforced abs, and back. Then the DB row over the full length to his hip, and keep your elbow close to your side.
To add a twist and target your upper lats differently back, put your body in the same position, place your hand so the palm faces now to his standing with his elbow out. This is known as an elbow out on the DB row, will be likely that you are a little weaker in this position.

Also, using his hand and knee to support the bank allows you to lift more weight, but you can also remove the support system and do these exercises one arm at a time or both hands.

Instead of using a bank, you use less weight with this exercise, but more effort you recruit your abdominal muscles and the muscles in your legs to support their position. You can still make regular DB Row or elbow out the DB row as you would with a bank, but now you are standing with a slight bend in the knees, leaning slightly to the rear.

The last exercise works your butt and tastes like a side lateral raises bent position. So, while standing with two dumbbells, publish them to the side, squeezing your shoulder blades together and draw back. You feel a strong contraction in the rear in this exercise.

The more this angle, the more you move the stress to the back of the shoulder, and even between the shoulder blades. More than a permanent position you're in, you recruit more middle delts. And when a permanent position right, you will work and earlier intermediate deltas over all.

Then the above are some simple exercises to train the lower back you can do at home without the need for a luxury gym equipment.
